FAQs

What should I wear?
If you have never ridden before, jeans and shoes or boots with a low heel are fine. We also have helmets and knee pads that you can borrow. If you have general riding equipment, that will be fine.

Do I need to know how to ride?
No, many of our members were total beginners before joining the club. Furthermore, polo requires a different style of riding to the standard English method, which is easier to pick up!

What if I've played before?
We field teams at wide range of levels.  If you have any questions about this feel free to email us or come visit us at the Sports Fair in Week 1 of the 1st term.

What are the different divisions for?

In your first year of polo you play in the Beginner division, regardless of previous riding experience. In your second year of polo onwards, you play in the Novice division. Players who reach a certain standard can then play in the Intermediate and Open Divisions.

Within each division there are different levels based on ability, e.g. Beginner 1, Beginner 2, Beginner 3. This means you will always be playing people of a similar ability to you. UWPC is one of the largest university polo clubs in the country, so usually enter teams in every level of each division.

What about insurance?
As soon as you join Warwick Sport and the Polo Club you will be covered to play in all of the university run lessons and chukkas. Furthermore the club we play at is fully insured and registered with the HPA and APSPH.

How do I join the Club?
To become a playing member please join the club on the Warwick SU website:

Do I need to have my own horse?
No, Offchurch Bury Polo Club where we train provides us with horses to hire that suit all levels.

What if I have my own polo pony?
A few of the members have their own horses and keep them at a very reasonable price at Offchurch Bury polo club. For more details please get in touch with them.

How do I get to the club?

We organise transport for everyone to get to and from their lessons, if you have your own car and help with the transport you can claim back mileage. There are some extra details here.

Can I just be a social member of the club?
Yes you can, if you just let us know and you join the Polo Club and Warwick Sport all the details of events will be sent to you via email.

Do you have socials?
Yes, we have a full social calendar throughout the year with barbecues at the polo yard, pub polo, nights at the union ('pop') with drinking circles, National Competition parties, sober socials, and many other events.

What IS circling?

Our most common social, and an established tradition at Warwick, this takes place on most Wednesdays in the Copper Rooms, the university's club on Campus. Tickets are only £4 each and popular dates, (e.g start and end of term) sell out weeks in advance so ALWAYS listen to your Social Secs and buy tickets when instructed. For the most committed members, a Season Pass or Platinum Card will alleviate the worry of missing out. There is often a fancy dress theme, decided by our two social secs, Bridget and Alfie.

Doors for Circling open at 7pm sharp. Upon arrival, you simply locate our table, and then proceed directly to the bar. The beverage of choice for almost everyone is ‘Purple’ (you may know it better as Snakebite & Black) at a very reasonable £1.50 a pint, although others are available. Make sure to be seated and ready at 7.30pm at the latest!

After that, it’s pretty self-explanatory. Everyone sits in a circle, except for the two Social Secs who stand in the middle and coordinate the fun. We then play a variety of games, some of which you may know, and some you won’t. This lasts for a couple of hours, after which the tables and chairs are removed and the club night can start with the cheesiest, most nostalgic beats you'll know and love.

How many people are in the polo club?
There were about 90 members last year - many of whom played on a regular basis.

How much does it cost?
See LESSON PRICING

Do I pay in advance?
No, you pay after each lesson. However you will need to pay an annual sum to Warwick Sport for admin purposes.

Do I need special equipment?
If you have it bring it, but we can supply everything-from mallets to ponies!

Are the teams mixed gender?
Yes

If I didn't join at the beginning of the year, am I too late?
